When poor Maximus ran into some sharp bushes, his parents brought him into our Prospect clinic to see Dr Helen after he seemed to be sore and squinting his left eye.
Dr Helen did a thorough eye examination where she found a corneal ulcer covering a whopping 1/3 of his cornea! Ouch! He was prescribed eye ointment and pain relief and a revisit was booked for the following week.
At his first revisit Dr Susan found that unfortunately the ulcer was still present and causing Maximus discomfort, as a last hurrah before surgical intervention, she prescribed some additional eye drops and eye lubricant with another revisit in a few days.
Unfortunately, at his second revisit with Dr Jo, the stubborn ulcer was hanging tight with no sign of healing. Now 10 days out of the traumatic event – Maximus’ team was confident that he would need surgical intervention. He was booked in for the following week with Dr Amy to have a debridement.
Maximus bounded into the Prospect clinic none-the-wiser of his big day ahead and got lots of love and cuddles from the team. After his pre-surgery prep, he went under a light sedation, so we were able to access his eye without risk of him moving. Dr Amy then used a specialty diamond burr tool to very gently remove the excess tissue from the cornea. The surgery went smoothly, and Maximus was back on his feet requesting pats and cuddles within the hour!
Dr Amy sent Maximus home with eye drops that are actually made from the serum from Maximus’ own blood! We take a blood sample from Maximus, spin the blood down to separate the serum from the red blood cells. The idea behind blood serum eye drops is using the patient’s own blood protein to aid in healing.
At his final revisit Dr Amy was very pleased with his progress with the ulcer now on the road to recovery. As sad as the Prospect team is to not have him visiting as frequently, they were all glad that he is on the road to recovery!
