Toy Poodles, Yorkshire Terriers, Maltese, Pomeranians and Shetland Sheepdogs are amongst the top canine breeds predisposed to periodontal disease according to Banfield’s Applied Research and Knowledge (BARK) team located in the US. Periodontal disease is characterised by the inflammation and loss of deep supporting structures of teeth and gums and is believed to be the most common disorder affecting dogs and cats. Researchers also found a very strong link between the presence of periodontal disease and heart disease, in particular endocarditis and cardiomyopathy.
Data from this study was generated from a case control study conducted by Banfield and including 50,000 animals with periodontal disease and 200,000 control animals.
According to the latest BARK research, the top 15 canine breeds predisposed to periodontal disease are as follows :-
