Named after its home area, the Afghan was originally bred for hunting or chasing down game. Also equipped with a unique long coat for protection in the extreme climates of the Afghani region. It wasn’t until the late 19th century that the Afghan was introduced into the western world.

The Afghan’s aloof demeanour and independent spirit means that they are a little more difficult to train than some other dogs. However, kindness and patient handling will quickly make the Afghan a loyal and loving companion.

Grooming and care
Coat colours come in a magnificent range from black and tan, to brindles, fawn, creams and black-masks of gold and silver. Grooming is one of the most important care needs of an Afghan. The long coat makes it a time consuming task, requiring weekly attention and taking anywhere between 30 minutes to 3 hours.
Exercise
The Afghan Hound requires considerable exercise (at least daily exercise) in order to maintain good physical condition, as well as a large yard in which to play. Out and about the Afghan should be well supervised, as a hunter by nature they can easily be lured or distracted for a chase!
